This is a temporary seasonal full time position not to exceed 1039 hours in a year, duty stationed at Wind Cave National Park. The primary purpose of the position is to perform routine and uncomplicated field and laboratory work in support of one or several parks' vegetation and fire monitoring programs.
Area Information The duty location of this position is in the Northern Great Plains Fire Management office at Wind Cave National Park, Hot Springs, SD. The 33,850 acre park has the fourth longest cave in the world that houses 95% of the world's box work formations. Approximately 70% of the park is mixed-grass prairie with the remaining area ponderosa pine forest. Numerous wildlife roam the park including bison, elk, mule deer, pronghorn, black footed ferrets, prairie dogs, and coyote. Wind Cave National Park is located in the southern Black Hills of southwest South Dakota, approximately 5 hours north of Denver, CO. Medical and dental services, shopping, restaurants, and churches of most faiths are available in Hot Springs (12 miles) and Custer (20 miles). Position serves as a member of a field crew that performs community vegetation sampling to assess the effects of prescribed burning at National Park Service units in the Northern Great Plains eco-region including parks in South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, and Wyoming. Establishes and monitors plots in a variety of fuel/vegetation types. Sampling includes identifying plants to the species level, recording various biological attributes, measuring fuel loading, and collecting/processing live and dead fuel moisture samples. Employee uses maps, compass, and GPS to locate and install permanent plots. Enters natural resource field data into a personal computer using FFI, Ecological Monitoring Utilities. Catalogs, labels, and stores plant materials collected during the season. Prepares fuel loading samples and processes fire weather, behavior and effects data.

Experience: Must have one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least a GS-04 grade level. Specialized experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience include Research activity or control program work, Nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment or Work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice.

SELECTIVE FACTOR : Must have a valid state driver's license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The nature of position requires considerable walking, running, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, backpacking, and climbing with a load over rough terrain, sometimes for extended periods. You may be required to lift and carry moderately heavy items.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed inside and outside. Outside work exposes the employee to inclement weather, which includes, heat, cold, rain, and snow. Work entails frequent exposure to dirt, dust, and greasy areas; bad smelling fumes may be present. Tasks require the employee to work under structures and on scaffolding, ladders, rooftops, and poles. Exposure to electrical shock while working on electrical devices, and slipping hazards on surfaces of unstable or slippery footing. Field work includes exposure to extreme weather, dermatitis causing plants, poisonous snakes, cuts, abrasions, and insect bites.
These positions are not designated Wildland Firefighting positions, however, if you desire to perform wildland fire duties you will be required to be red carded and firefighter ready. You will be subject to mandatory drug testing with favorable results and subject to random drug testing during employment. Testing will be provided at the expense of the government. All NPS employees wishing to be available to perform wildland fire duties must pass the standard fire fighting fitness test. The standard fire fighting fitness test is the 'Pack Test'. The test consists of speed walking a three-mile distance in 45 minutes or less, while carrying a 45-pound pack. Selectees must also pass the arduous duty physical examination.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
